Elena Kovylina
Cultivated carrot

Elena Kovylina is one of the most famous Russian performance artists, she is often called the “Russian Marina Abramovich”. E. Kovylina participated in the largest international art forum, the Venice Biennale, the Manifesto European Traveling Biennale, the Sydney Biennale, the Sharjah Biennale, received the Innovation Award and the State Award of the Russian Academy of Arts “Against the Course”, winner of numerous international grants. Gallery 21 will show the culmination of the sensational project "Cultivated Carrots". The audience will see the paintings - the result of the performance and a serious study of the artist, dedicated to the interaction of the viewer and the picture, the image of modern art in people who have no professional attitude to it, and the whole topic of communication; accompanied by video documentation of the project. Elena about the project: “The project“ Carrot culture ”(“ Carotte culturele ”) is an attempt to let art assert itself in an atmosphere of“ cultural isolation ”, meet the audience by inviting him to see familiar everyday images as objects of the so-called“ high culture ”. The name of the project plays into the ambiguity and diversity of the term “culture” itself, since not only in Russian, but also in European languages, it can refer both to the spiritual and material sphere - to artistic creativity, and to agricultural activity. Due to the peculiarities of the civilizational development of Russia, modern art as a phenomenon of the postindustrial world grows with difficulty in our country. The goal of the project is to establish a dialogue between the public and the arts, to create an interaction of cultures - agrarian and artistic, modern information (culture of new media) and traditional agricultural, as well as to overcome the isolation of the Russian population from actual artistic processes. In 2018, the project received a wide response, it was seen by more than 5,000 people. Elena Kovylina presented a project in Vyksa, on the Danilovsky market, at the exhibition “Here and Now” in the Manezh and at the Cosmoscow 2018 Contemporary Art Fair. Igor Grebelnikov, a columnist for the Kommersant newspaper: “Perhaps the most illustrative in this sense was the performance“ Carrot Cultural ”by Elena Kovylina, one of the most radical and famous Russian performers: all 20 days of the exhibition, dressed as a trader from the market and surrounded by goods, she will sell her paintings on it. These are images of various crops painted on canvas - from dill and beet tops to carrots and eggplant. A rather eloquent testimony about the local art market and the general position of the contemporary artist, who has to replace his radicalism with uncomplicated crafts. Although who knows, maybe a new round in the development of local culture will begin with exercises in painting sticks, drawing vegetables or arranging porches. ” Gallery 21, founded by Ksenia Podoinitsyna in 2010, is engaged in exhibition activities in the field of contemporary art and presents to the public the works of the most interesting and recognized young authors. The gallery focuses on the art of the future, meaning by this art, which goes from standard visual images to the area of semantic effects, giving the work a special meaning. Working primarily with Russian artists, the gallery represents Russian art on the world stage, thus contributing to building multidirectional links between the participants of the Russian art scene and foreign authors.
