Sergey Sapozhnikov
12-24

Gallery XL presents the exhibition of the artist fr om Rostov-on-Don Sergey Sapozhnikov "12-24".

The name of the exhibition, as if borrowed from the name of the folder of the author's personal archive, indicates the year when the project was created (2012) and the year when it was first presented to the public (2024).

According to Sergey Sapozhnikov, the photographs of the series, made with a film camera, are almost random shots dedicated to the design and architecture of small forms. However, in Sapozhnikov's lens, even the most ordinary spaces and things, whether they are empty animal cages from the Tiergarten series (2018) or entrance windows from the Stairwell (2022), become something unique. The reality documented in the pictures - places and non-places wh ere most people do not even hold their gaze, suddenly turns into something that is interesting to consider, what is interesting to think about, guess, assume. And random confluences of visual circumstances become so aesthetically attractive that they seem artificial - like a diorama of a city covered with glass.

The very space of the exhibition "12-24" is an incomprehensible, difficult location. Huge banners are replaced by small photographs fixed against a background of shower curtains; interiors and exteriors flooded with soft light are replaced; finally, 12 years are replaced - from the moment the series was created to the moment it was shown.

Sergey Sapozhnikov was born in 1984. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Psychology of the Southern Federal University and the course "New Artistic Strategies" of the Institute of Contemporary Art Problems (Moscow).
