PENNLAB Gallery presents the exhibition "The Principle of Complementarity," bringing together six artists fr om the Fotoosnova Printing Practices Lab at the Svody Art Production Center at the GES-2 Community Center. The exhibition will run fr om March 4 to April 10, 2026. Curated by Yegor Zaika, the project explores photography through the prism of the philosophical principle of the same name, formulated by physicist Niels Bohr in 1927. The principle of complementarity shattered the binary logic of "either-or," demonstrating that mutually exclusive descriptions of a single phenomenon (for example, light as a wave and as a particle) can coexist, complementing each other. Within this logic, photography emerges not simply as a recording of reality, but as a perceptual model, a field wh ere statics acquire dynamics, flatness strives for volume, and documentary enters into dialogue with abstraction. The exhibition's participants explore these dual states, pushing the medium beyond its own limitations. Exhibition participants: Irina Zyuskina, in her series "Source," examines cell phone towers as a technogenic infrastructure, creating an invisible yet defining immaterial layer above familiar space. Alisa Lapshina, in her project "0000 0000," addresses water as an "invisible" resource of digital civilization. Reflections on the water become a metaphor for fractal data compression, wh ere complex structure emerges fr om a minimal set of parameters. Dmitry Khvan, in his series "It Was Better Before," explores the metamodernist coexistence of irony and seriousness. The artist questions how individuality manifests itself within the unified environment of mass culture. Katya Andrianova, in her work "The Pattern Came Together—And I Disintegrated," deconstructs photography down to its color layers, questioning its documentary nature. Here, reality is not fixed, but reassembled through alternative printing methods. In her series "Over the Sea," Nina Minchenok addresses the theme of personal loss, transforming the experience of disappearance into a new form of tangible presence that emerges in the space of memory and attention. Vasilisa Bikeyeva, in her series "Traces of the White City," follows the traditions of the Düsseldorf School, capturing traces of the lost white city wall. Like a photographic negative, the city preserves the dark trace of an absent form in its topography. The authors' approach transforms photography from a fixed image into an event, wh ere observation becomes action, and the viewer's gaze a form of intervention. More about the curator: Egor Zaika is a curator and photographer. Since 2001, his work has been published in VOGUE, Harper's Bazaar, GQ, Esquire, L'Officiel, and ELLE, specializing in portraiture and fashion photography. He is a Graphis Photo and Best of Russia laureate and an Astra Prize nominee. He is the author of the projects "Home," "Craft" (monograph, 2009), and "Motherland" (2016). Since 2013, he has been conducting research into the spaces of former Nazi camps, presented at the Jewish Museum (2015) and the Museum of Architecture (2026). In 2024–2025, he created a series of projects on theater in collaboration with the Lenkom, the Moscow Art Theater, and the Obraztsov Theater. In 2025, he joined the expert council of the National Museum Prize and became the curator of the "Photobase" workshop at GES-2. His works are in the collections of MAMM, the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia, the Museum of Architecture, the GES-2 libraries, and the Garage. Detailed information about the gallery: PENNLAB Gallery is a gallery working with contemporary Russian photography in the context of contemporary art, founded in February 2021. Since 2024, it has been a member of the Association of Galleries (AGA) and is a member of the organization's expert group on printed art. The PENNLAB gallery space was opened on February 24, 2021, by Nikolai Dmitriev and Mikhail Krasnov. The gallery collaborates with both young artists and renowned Russian masters of 20th-century photography. It regularly organizes exhibitions and educational events for the general public and professionals, and participates in auctions and fairs.
