Figure of Speech

Moskomarchitecture and CCA Winzavod present a new street art exhibition "Figure of Speech"

Since July 31, the street art exhibition "Figure of Speech" has been open. This is the seventh project for Art Kvartal, which is implemented by the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art together with Moskomarchitecture. "The new exhibition of the street gallery NOWALLS was named "Figure of Speech". This is a space of creative dialog, where you can trace the evolution of visual language and through a series of images to lead the viewer through the pages of the history of fine art. And you can "read" this peculiar "textbook" of visual language in any direction: both fr om simple to complex and vice versa," says Sergey Kuznetsov, Chief Architect of Moscow. The first legal street art gallery NOWALLS is located along the railroad tracks on the road from Kurskaya metro station. This is the main artery that leads to creative clusters, with thousands of people passing along the wall every day. NOWALLS gallery is also open as an entry point to Art Kvartal, wh ere two major creative clusters - Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art and Artplay - operate.

The project is curated by artist Alexei Partola, the author of the first large-scale study of Russian street art "Parts of the Walls". He invited the artists to create works - conceptual statements. It is no coincidence that the common, opening work of the exhibition is a kind of journey through the history of fine art. "For me as a curator, a holistic statement by the artist is very important. That's why I proposed to show the visual development of fine art from petroglyphs to contemporary art. In the context of the city, of a certain historical moment, to draw parallels between what has always happened in fine art and what is happening now. And the non-standard choice of participants allows to dialog not only with the audience, but also artists with each other, choosing different languages of communication, including abstract", - says the curator of the project Alexei Partola.

The project participants use abstract figurative as a means of communication, a common creative denominator that allows them to convey their intent and semantic context without words. This basic visual language of the works allows the artists to embody their ideas in contours, shapes, lines and at the same time to use a variety of artistic approaches. From laconic minimalism with restrained lines to expressive painting with bright colors.
